Understanding Color Harmonies

Color harmonies are established formulas for choosing colors that look good together. By using the geometry of the color wheel, you can create specific moods and levels of contrast in your designs.

  • Complementary: Uses two colors directly opposite each other on the color wheel. This scheme creates the highest level of contrast and visual tension, making elements stand out vividly.

  • Analogous: Uses three colors located right next to each other on the wheel. This results in harmonious, serene designs that are easy on the eyes and often found in nature.

  • Split Complementary: Uses a base color plus the two colors adjacent to its direct complement. This offers the high contrast of a complementary scheme but with significantly less visual tension.

  • Triadic: Uses three colors equally spaced around the wheel (120° apart). This creates a vibrant and balanced look, even when the colors are desaturated.

  • Square (Tetradic): Uses four colors equally spaced around the wheel (90° apart). This provides a rich, diverse palette that works best when one color is dominant and the others act as accents.

  • Rectangle (Tetradic): Uses four colors that form a rectangle on the wheel, consisting of two pairs of complementary colors. This offers plenty of variety while maintaining a sense of balance.

Available Color Themes

  • Balanced: Well-distributed colors with moderate saturation and brightness.

  • Light/Pastel: Soft, muted colors with high lightness values.

  • Bright/Neon: Vivid, saturated colors that pop.

  • Aesthetic: Trendy, Instagram-worthy color combinations.

  • Warm: Reds, oranges, yellows – cozy and inviting.

  • Cold: Blues, greens, purples – calm and professional.

  • Retro: Nostalgic colors from the 70s and 80s.

  • Vintage: Aged, muted tones with a classic feel.

  • Monochromatic: Variations of a single hue.
